Though at first Virginians of the Civil War era were reluctant to count their votes among the secessionists, yearning for the protection of the Union, they changed their minds as they saw the reality of Union forces approaching their land, and fought with much conviction for the Confederate cause.
Vincent Wingfield, emerges from this backdrop as a southern planter harboring an unlikely conscience and empathy for the cause of abused slaves.
