Through Three Campaigns, or
A Story of Chitral, Tirah, and Ashantee by G. A. Henty - book
ILLUSTRATED
In this novel, Henty praises the "contempt for danger" of the British soldiers who fought in small but dangerous Indian campaigns. Though obscure, the three campaigns depicted here were carried out in treacherous environments where the landscape was as fatal as the enemy. The relief of Chitral and the Tirah campaign were set in mountainous country with deep snow, rushing torrents, and steep mountain passes to be crossed. The relief of Coomassie was fought in a tropical forest during the rainy season, with British troops at a distinct disadvantage against the Ashanti foe.
Lisle Bullen, a young orphan lad, joins the British forces in order to become a man. As he faces enemies and perilous terrain, his bravery on the field at Chitral, Tirah, and Coomassie is ultimately rewarded.
