The City of the King by Susan E. Wallace
ILLUSTRATED Along the Bosphorus describes the conflicts between ancient Greece and the many Middle Eastern empires from pre-history to Saladin, the Crusades and the Ottoman Empire. She moves from myth to history, from the gods of Olympian to the heroes of Homer's Odyssey. ILLUSTRATED In The City of the King, Susan Wallace’s richly describes Jerusalem and Bethlehem in biblical times, most particularly during Christ’s lifetime. She then contrasts these times with the Jerusalem and Bethlehem experienced during her visits there in the 1880s.

The Land of the Pueblos by Susan E. Wallace

Wallace began writing The Fair God in 1847 while serving as a Lt. in the First Indiana Infantry during the Mexican War, forces commanded by Gen. Zachary Taylor against the Mexican President, Santa Anna. Wallace spent many evenings studying and writing.

ILLUSTRATED Land of the Pueblos offers a richly detailed history and first-person narrative of the New Mexico Territory and the American Southwest from the arrival of the earliest Spanish Conquistadores; the systematic genocide of native American peoples; claims, claim jumpers and lost mines; the Mexican American War; and the then turbulent, violent, lawless period from1878-1881

In 1881, Ben-Hur admirer, Pres. James Garfield appointed Lew Wallace U.S. Minister to Turkey, in part, to aid Wallace research and write a massive novel about Constantinople reworking the legend of the Wandering Jew. Harper & Bros advanced Wallace an unprecedented $500,000 based on Ben-Hur’s success. Wallace labored for twelve years to complete the resulting novel. In 1881, Ben-Hur admirer, Pres.
