This is Alger's first book, dedicated to his mother. It is a
collection of twenty short stories, some of whichand possibly
allappeared previously in various story-papers and other periodicals.
All of these stories were written before Alger settled upon his ultimate
Rags to Riches theme. Nevertheless, they reflect a tender
feeling toward those who are poor and destitute, but rich in spirit.
Each story has a well constructed plot and surprise ending. Although
the stories were written for young readers, they appeal to thoughtful
adults as well.
