Boy Detective.
Dan Mordaunt, a keen and pleasant New York City
newsboy lives with his mother in poverty. His mother’s delicate health
prevents her from earning much money. The Mordaunts had formerly been
financially secure, until Mr. Mordaunt’s bookkeeper absconded with thirty
thousand dollars, leading to the failure of the family business and Mr.
Mordaunt’s untimely and devastating death. Soon young Dan embarks on an
ad-hoc career as a detective. He chases down ruffians and rascals who have
stolen money and passed off counterfeit bills to unwitting recipients. A Mr.
Rogers observes Dan’s ability to apprehend miscreants, and offers him a
position as a detective at Barton and Rogers. Dan accepts the esteemed
position, and strives to assist the firm by bringing the dishonest to justice.
Meanwhile, a mysterious lady takes an interest in Dan and his mother, and
eventually leaves her little girl, Althea, in their care. She tells the
Mordaunts that Althea is her niece, and pays them to look after her, which
enables them to move to better lodgings. Unfortunately, Althea is kidnapped by
her father, and Dan must apply his detective skills to bring her back and
ensure the safety and prosperity of them all.
