sixteen-year-old Dean Dunham travels west to find his fortune and solves the
mystery of this uncle's robbery. Aka: Wait Till the Clouds Roll By.
Sixteen-year-old Dean Dunham lives with his aunt
and uncle in New York. A neighbor, Squire Bates, holds the mortgage for his
uncle’s property, which his uncle hopes to pay off. Luckily, he receives a
good deal of money from the sale of another plot of land. Uncle Dunham rides
to town in his buggy to collect his cash. However, a partially-masked
robber assaults him on his trip home, and steals one thousand dollars. Uncle
Dunham recognizes the peculiar fang-like teeth of Squire Bates, but only Dean
trusts his uncle’s story, as no one will believe that the seemingly affable
Squire Bates could be to blame. Squire Bates calls on a confederate,
Peter Kirby, to get Dean out of the way. Kirby hires Dean as a traveling
secretary and tries to take his life far from home. Dean must escape to make
his way back to retrieve the stolen money from Squire Bates, thereby
preventing him from foreclosing on the mortgage.
