ILLUSTRATED Gerald Lane heads
west to seek his fortune and claim the money owed his father by an
unscrupulous former business partner. Aka: A Debt of Honor; or, On His Own
Merit.
Before Gerald’s father, Lane, died, he told the
boy a curious story. Long ago, his father had taken the blame for a forged
check. His co-worker, Bradley Wentworth was actually the guilty party, but he
had usurped the money from his own uncle’s account, and did not want to
endanger the substantial fortune he expected to inherit. Lane agreed to the
ensuing disgrace, in exchange for payments from Wentworth. Unfortunately,
Wentworth did not uphold his end of the bargain.
On his deathbed, Lane asks Gerald to settle this injustice, giving him the
original contract. Gerald accepts the quest, and becomes the companion of the
honorable Noel Brooke, while trying to avoid Wentworth’s repeated attempts to
take possession of the incriminating papers. Gerald’s work eventually takes
him to Minnesota, where he hopes to clear his father’s name and the path to
his fortune.
