Bound to Make His Way. In New World Series.
Grant Colburn, 16, lives with his mother and
stepfather, Mr. Tarbox, on a small farm in Woodburn, Iowa. His mother married
Tarbox for financial security. Yet Tarbox is a stingy provider, and Grant
decides to strike out on his own at the first opportunity. Grant's big
break arrives unexpectedly. One day as he walks along the railroad, he notices
that a section of tracks are open. He signals the engineer in time to prevent
catastrophe, and the passengers on board are so grateful for his heroism that
they collect a monetary reward.
Grant’s newfound wealth enables him to leave Iowa and travel to California,
trying his luck at gold-digging. He meets a jovial companion, Mr. Cooper, and
the wealthy Englishman Mr. Crosmont who treats him like a son. They encounter
many problems en route to California, including near starvation. When they
finally arrive, Grant has little luck finding gold, but his friendships prove
valuable in his effort to provide for his mother and himself.
