Harry Vane, a pleasant and resolute boy of
sixteen, faces a bleak future as an orphan with a meager estate, after his
father’s death. Forced to live with his relative, John Fox, Harry is treated
poorly by Fox’s greedy family. One day, while walking along the
railroad, Harry notices that a portion of the track has been washed away. He
quickly flags down the approaching train, saving the lives of the grateful
passengers, who take up a collection for Harry. However, Fox claims the money
and locks Harry up when he refuses to hand it over. Harry manages to
escape and is picked up by a traveling magician, Professor Hemenway, who soon
hires Harry as an assistant. Harry proves his worth at this job and also
demonstrates talent as a singer. The pair strike off for Australia, but en
route their ship is ravaged by a storm. They undergo the trials of being
stranded on a desolate island while trying to make it to Australia. Readers
can follow Harry’s subsequent adventures in the sequel entitled, In a New
World.
