Harry Gilbert, a cheerful fifteen-year-old, lives with his widowed mother in Greenville, not far from New York City. He supports his mother by working in a grocery store, but loses his job when the store owner hires his nephew to replace him. Now poor, he becomes the target of Philip Reed, the son of a wealthy Colonel, who continually antagonizes Harry. Meanwhile, Philip’s own relative, Obed Wilkins, comes to visit the Reeds. They treat him poorly, thinking him penniless. But Harry’s family shows Obed respect, inviting him into their home.  Philip, anxious to get even, lures Harry into the woods and ties him up. Harry manages to escape, and on the way home stumbles upon two hoodlums burying a tin of government bonds. Suspecting that the bonds are stolen, Harry alerts a detective to their presence and receives a monetary reward in bonds.
Meanwhile, Philip Reed has stolen a different set of bonds from his father to pay back his own debts. He implicates Harry in the crime, and Harry must prove his innocence, despite the fact that his recently acquired bonds show up in a search of his family’s property.
