Bert Barton, a boy of fifteen, lives in a small Eastern village and supports his mother by working for $4 a week in a shoe factory owned by his disagreeable rich relative, Squire Marlowe. Nobody knows where the squire got the capital to start up the factory. Bert believed his father, Simeon, was dead when in fact he was in exile, falsely accused ten years earlier, of having stolen government bonds.  Jacob Marlowe, the uncle of Bert's mother and Squire Marlowe’s wife, visits after an absence of twenty years. Squire Marlowe rejects him, but Bert and his mother welcome him. Shortly thereafter, Squire Marlow fires Bert, and Bert's father returns. Uncle Jacob invites Bert to New York and Chicago in a desperate attempt to help clear his father’s name.
