ILLUSTRATED A humble school janitor makes an enemy of an arrogant student
whose rich father determines to get him fired, but he is vindicated in the
end. Aka: Andy Gordon; or The Fortunes of a Young Janitor
Unable to afford classes, Andy Gordon subsidizes
his education by taking care of the school-house. One day, Andy’s mother
receives a letter from her wealthy uncle, Simon Dodge, who asks for help in
extricating himself from a situation. His daughter, Sarah, had married a man
named Jeremiah Brackett. Later, Sarah died and Brackett remarried. His new
wife is ill-tempered, and the two of them, after ten years and four children,
are pressuring Dodge to make a will, bequeathing them his entire estate.
Andy selflessly agrees to help his uncle and, under the assumed name of Henry
Miller, is hired by Brackett to work on the farm. Once there, Andy must use
his wits to uncover Dodge’s scheme, risking Brackett’s retribution.
