Nat Nason, an orphan, was first taken in by his Aunt Mary, who did what she could for him. When she dies his uncle, Abner Balberry, who owns an Ohio farm, took custody. When Abner mistreats him, Nat sells a cow and uses the money to travel to New York City. After several misfortunes, good luck puts him in the hands of John Garwell, a kind and honest real estate broker.  Nat begins as a seven-dollar-a-week clerk in Mr. Garwell's office and soon rises to the position of secretary. Yet, Mr. Garwell proves to be a more valuable friend than employer, as he helps to make a discovery that changes Nat’s life irreversibly.
