This story is a continuation of the adventures
of Harry Vane, 16, who, in Facing the World, finally arrived in Melbourne,
Australia after being shipwrecked and stranded on a lonely island. Harry and
his young sailor friend, Jack Pentleton, because of the high prices in
Melbourne, decide to try the gold fields of Bendigo, north of Melbourne.
Traveling with Harry are Dick Fletcher and a Yankee, Obed Stackpole. Their
progress is slow and tortuous, due to the boggy nature of the territory. They
finally come to a crude roadside inn, the Travelers' Rest, where Harry happens
to overhear a conversation between Fletcher and the inn-keeper, Mr. Vinton
making plans to rob the others. Harry relays this information Stackpole, who
immediately relieves Fletcher of his gun, and forces him to go it alone.
Eventually they arrive in Bendigo, where the three men must work hard hope for
the best to assure that their mining claim comes to fruition.
