Guy Fenwick, a boy of 16 with a capacity for
business, lives with his clergyman father near New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Guy receives permission from his father to examine the contents of an old
chest in the attic. There Guy discovers clues to the location of a pirate
treasure buried on a remote island in the Indian Ocean. Later, Captain
Grover, a friend of Guy’s father, invites him to journey to Bombay, India.
When they arrive, Guy prevents a crime, saving the life of a rich English
merchant. After Guy tells the Brit of the treasure, the man gives the boy
authority to sponsor an expedition to recover it. Arrangements are made
for to sail for Bombay, but Guy and the merchant must locate the remote island
to see if the map reveals a true treasure.
