Jack Harding lives in New York City with his
parents. His father is out of work, and money is scarce. When a baby named Ida
is left on their doorstep, the Hardings welcome her. Ida quickly becomes a
family favorite and Jack looks on himself as her guardian. Six years later the
family is persuaded to allow Ida to visit her supposed birth mother. Instead,
she is taken to Philadelphia by a woman, Mrs. Hardwick who had earlier
kidnapped Ida, conspiring with an unsuccessful suitor of Ida's real mother,
the New York socialite, Mrs. Clifton.
Jack learns that Ida and Mrs. Hardwick are headed for Philadelphia. Jack
travels to Philadelphia to try and locate them. He runs into Mrs. Hardwick and
is invited to her home, where she locks him in. Even though the prospect of
losing Ida to her Mrs. Clifton hurts Jack, he must escape from Mrs. Hardwick’s
clutches to give his “sister” a home.
