ILLUSTRATED Jerry Blue, a New York State farm boy, seeks to unravel the
mystery of his parentage while helping his guardian recover a buried treasure.
In the Stratemeyer Completion.
Squire Parkhurst, a rich New Yorker in his
forties, riddled with bad investments, is forced to resettle on the western
frontier—which in 1820, means upstate New York. He resides in a cabin
alongside a lake, with his beautiful daughter, Mabel; his housekeeper,
Mahitable Higgens; and a house boy, Zack. Problems arise when Dick
Clarke, a crafty, uncomely New York lawyer, visits Squire Parkhurst with a
most unusual proposition. He has a letter written by the Squire's father,
describing the location of a buried chest of gold coins, which he will turn
over if Mabel agrees to marry him. Mabel, in love with a young, handsome
neighbor, Henry Davenport, must decide between love and financial security,
until an unwarranted turn of events makes the decision for her. This
book was first published as Mabel Parker; or, The Hidden Treasure.
