world and finds work, first at a local hotel, then at a large Chicago hotel.

Joe Bodley, twelve, lives with his uncle, Hiram
Bodley, in central Pennsylvania. Hiram never mentions Joe’s parents until he
is fatally injured. Hiram’s dying words are, "I put it in the blue box…" Joe
and his friend Ned Talmadge, search for the blue box unsuccessfully.
Later, Joe and Ned come upon the blue box inside a hollow log. Inside, they
find $100 and some papers suggesting that William A. Bodley, perhaps Joe's
father, had once owned a farm in Iowa. In the meantime, Joe and another
friend, Maurice Vane, strike out for Montana to investigate the mine in which
Vane held stock. The mines uncover the mysteries surrounding not only Joe’s
parentage, but also his estate.
