ILLUSTRATED Driven out by a hard-hearted relative, young Lester Gray goes to
New York City and gets a job as a stockbroker's clerk, then is sent to Montana
to become a bank bookkeeper. Aka: Won by Courage.
Lester Gray, homeless and almost penniless,
walks to Shelby, New York, to visit his distant relative, Squire Dunton,
hoping the squire will offer him work. But he treats Lester poorly. William
Thornton, also apparently a poor visiting relative of the squire, gives Lester
money for a proposed trip to New York City. While in the city, Lester
gives financial advice to an investor, Mr. Compton, and the investor realizes
a large profit. Lester invests part of his reward from Mr. Compton with Mr.
Thornton, in a Chicago mining venture. Mr. Compton, learning that Lester
had studied accounting, dispatches him to serve as a bookkeeper. Lester learns
that through loyalty, honesty, and shrewd investment, one can secure a name
for himself—and financial stability.
