Major Effingham and his wife live a luxurious life. They own a beautiful home and are devoted to each other. However, their fairy tale life changes when Mr. Effingham receives a letter from an old acquaintance by the name of Madeline. He confers with his wife, who has heard a great deal of Madeline, and both are eager to meet with her. What Mr. Effingham chooses not to reveal to his wife is that he and Madeline had once been more than friends, they had been betrothed to each other. Faced with Madeline in person, Mr. Effingham realizes he is still in love with her. Drama ensues, and all that are involved must suffer through heartbreak until all is resolved.
