ILLUSTRATED Cheated of his inheritance by his scheming stepmother, young
Gerald Lane goes to work for a lawyer who sends him on a perilous mission to
Montana to recover stolen money.
Gerald Lane, 16, lives in Portsville with his
stepmother, who controls the $150,000 estate of his late father. The
stepmother denies Gerald the chance to attend Bowdoin College as his father
had planned, but instead, hires him out to the grocer for $3 a week. The
stepmother's brother, a blacksmith, visits Gerald's home, to raise a few
hundred dollars to rebuild his burned-out store. One day, when Gerald and the
blacksmith are out boating, they see a fire in the home of a wealthy, retired
man, Mr. Nugent. They save Mr. Nugent's life. He rewards the blacksmith by
providing the funds for rebuilding his shop. Mr. Nugent sends Gerald by train
to Campville, Montana to investigate the affairs of a rich recluse, Tom Nixon,
who admits that he was guilty of stealing $20,000 from Mr. Nugent’s firm years
earlier and now wants to make restitution. Yet Gerald must help Mr.
Nixon recover his health and self-pride before he can accomplish his task for
Nugent. |
