ILLUSTRATED Mark Stanton, a New York City clerk, is shanghaied aboard a ship
bound for San Francisco. Aka: Both Sides of the Continent.
Mark Stanton lives with his widowed mother, Emma
Stanton, and a girl, Jennie, whom they rescued from an abusive guardian.
Jennie soon becomes very dear to them. Philip Pell, Mrs. Stanton’s
half-brother, knows of her inheritance, keeping her in the dark. He hires John
Roberts, Captain of the Petrel, to kidnap Mark. Posing as a former friend of
Mark's father, the Captain invites Mark to visit his ship. Shortly after
boarding, the Captain gives Mark a sedative. When the boy awakes, hours later,
the ship is far out to sea.
Mark accepts the situation stoically. When the ship arrives in San Francisco,
Mark is offered a job in a mining camp, helping a retired, wealthy miner, by
the name of Sandy Mackaye. By a remarkable coincidence, Mr. Mackaye is the
uncle of little Jennie. Mark and Mr. Mackaye must return to New York and
expose Philip Pell in order to set things right within their respective
families.
