Paul Hoffman lives in New York City with his
widowed mother and a younger brother. Their meager income comes primarily from
Paul's work as a street merchant.
Paul becomes acquainted with a man named George Barry, who owns a necktie
stand which yields a steady profit. When Mr. Barry becomes ill, he asks Paul
run the stand. This income becomes adequate support for the family.
Unfortunately, when George Barry recovers, Paul is again out of a job.
However, Mr. Barry, who is leaving the city, gives him the opportunity to buy
out the necktie stand. To raise money, Paul's mother suggests they sell or
pawn a diamond ring she had found two years earlier. Paul sells the ring to
Tiffany's Jewelry Store. However, before the transaction can be made, the ring
is stolen. Now Paul must find a way to raise enough money to buy the
stand, while at the same time searching for the stolen ring.
