Ragged Dick is the story which brought Horatio Alger, Jr. initial fame. With its sequel, Fame and Fortune, it traces the early life of Richard Hunter, an orphan and street boy known as Ragged Dick.  Dick lives and sleeps on the streets of New York City, working as a bootblack. Sharp, handsome, dirty and honest, he spends his meager income on food, entertainment, and an occasional game of cards.  Two friends, Frank Whitney and Henry Fosdick, help him better himself by teaching him new skills.  The story is rich in information on early New York City seen through the eyes of a street boy and describes Dick’s numerous adventures as he meets up with swindlers, thieves and con artists.
