Randy Thompson, lives in Riverport with his
father, a carpenter, who has rheumatism. When it becomes necessary for Randy
to help out with expenses, his uncle, Peter Thompson, gives them the use of a
rundown cottage and twelve acres of land. Randy renovates the cottage and
makes arrangements with a neighbor to furnish them milk, eggs and vegetables
in return for several acres of pasture. Randy's friend’s father, Mr.
Bartlett, the largest shareholder in an iron works factory, is in financial
trouble. Another shareholder, Mr. Bangs, is threatening a takeover of the
firm, an act which would have ruined Mr. Bartlett. Randy must come up with a
plan to save the factory from ruin, while at the same time care for his ailing
father.
