When their mother dies, Rufus and Rose are
forced to live with their drunken stepfather, James Martin. As Rufus earns
money selling newspapers Martin carelessly spends Rufus’ wages on drinks and
gambling. When Martin sells Rose’s new clothes for drinking money, Rufus is
furious. He and Rose immediately move out of the house, without informing
their stepfather. After Rufus buys back Rose's clothes, he takes Rose to live
with Miss Manning, a friendly, unmarried seamstress. Rufus then took up
quarters at the Newsboys' Lodge.
Rufus embarks on many adventures that will change his life for the better on
his way to meeting his goals towards a more fortunate future for himself and
his sister.
