ILLUSTRATED This is a first edition of an Alger Tale serialized in 1858. This
story takes into shabby back alleys of New York, into pawn shops, and searches
for a missing will.
Unable to support her sister, Nellie, Rose
Greyson must sell an old table for money. A man quickly buys the table,
uncovering a secret drawer containing the will of Ralph Greyson, Nellie and
Roses’ father. He brings the will to Robert Greyson, who never knew that his
brother had a family. Robert conspires to keep the inheritance for his
daughter, Claudine, plotting to send his nieces to a boarding school. Unaware
that Mr. Greyson is their uncle, they merely believe that this event has been
a fortuitous occurrence. The arrangements are made by Ben Jones, Mr.
Greyson’s attorney who meets Rose and proposes to her. When she refuses, he
angrily reveals to her the details of her uncle’s scheme. Still unable to
persuade Rose, Jones, a lonely and desperate man, turns his attention to
Claudine. The only thing that can save the family is Mr. Greyson’s unlikely
change of heart.
