Gilbert Greyson is an orphan and knows only that
his father had died in the West Indies. He has been in Dr. Burton's boarding
school for six years, but is abruptly taken out by his guardian, Richard
Briggs, who claims that his funds had run out. Gilbert finds employment
a New York brokerage office. One day after work, Gilbert notices a destitute
flower girl crying one afternoon. He discovers that her father is sick and
that they are to be evicted. Gilbert decides to visit the house and generously
offers to pay a month's rent for them. Glibert continues to help the sick man
and his daughter while trying to make a life for himself as well. During this
time, Gilbert discovers some information in his dealings that will change his
life forever.
